Hello Spring!

2014-03-25 20.14.50

That was by far the longest, coldest winter EVER!  When even my very optimistic, upbeat, energetic friends conceded it was a difficult winter, I knew it wasn’t just the estrogen leaving my body that might be bringing me down.  (By the way, I may be the only one of record who – when struck with some possible ‘heat’ – was grateful!)

Many of you were stuck inside this winter due to the extreme cold, ice, snow or depression.  I get it.  I really do.  I started to wonder if I would ever get my zest back!  But at last, with strength and resilience, spring has graced us with her presence.

If I learned anything from this hellish winter, it was patience.  I had to remind myself to be patient with my process, patient with people, and patient with the passing of the season.

Like the pansies and daffodils slowly unfolding in their glorious wonder, may you too begin to unfold, stretch, breathe and believe that all things are possible with patience and movement.

The Strength of Community

The first community October 1995

The ‘first community,’ October, 1995

I was one of those kids who ALWAYS felt left out – never part of a group, never felt like I belonged. When I created my first class for plus size women I knew I was not alone. These women inspired me with their courage and faith to create a community that would be the core of my work. These women gave me the strength to embark on my graduate work at NYU specializing in Plus Size Exercise.

I spent many days indoors this winter and struggled to stay optimistic.  I felt myself on that slippery slope of junk food and trashy TV.  But it was the power of my communities that kept me moving forward.  I am a total groupie these days and am blessed to be part of Health at Every Size, Toastmasters, the National Speakers Association, the dance community, and the fitness community.  But it all comes back to you – you are the ones who taught me the power of coming together – to accept one another, to share, to grow.

It takes time to create a community and its scary to make that first step.  But borrow my faith and believe.  We are meant not to isolate – but instead to embrace.

Water – A Health Centered Approach

Immune System Boost!

Immune System Boost!

Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

  • 70% of the human body content is water.
  • The human brain cells contain about 85% of water.
  • 75% of muscles are water.
  • Bones also contain about 25% water.
  • 82% of blood consists of water.

An increase in your water consumption will:

  • Help you feel less tired during the day.
  • Help you feel more refreshed.
  • Keep your mind alert for better food choices.
  • Reduce caffeine intake.

Action:  Slowly increase your water intake over the next week.  If you drink 2 (8) oz glasses, try 3.  If you drink 3 (8) oz glasses, try 4 and so on.

Additional action:  Make it lemon water for the following reasons:

  • Boosts to your immune system.
  • Aids with digestion.
  • Flushes toxins from your body.
  • Reduces inflammation.

Moving Forward

Jon Robison, PhD, MS & Rochelle Rice

Jon Robison & Rochelle Rice

The WSSG (Weight Stigma Stakeholders’ Group) has successfully completed its task of submitting suggestions to Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign.  I am proud to be part of this group and very pleased with our efforts.  I’ll be sure to keep you posted!

I had the extreme pleasure to FINALLY meet Jon Robison, PhD, MS.  Jon has been involved in holistic health promotion and Health at Every Size(R) for over 20 years.  We have been in the same community for years but have never had the opportunity to meet.  I am pleased to announce that I will be teaching Jon’s 10 week  “Health for Every Body” program at a law firm here in NYC beginning April 17th.   An absolute dream come true!

And lastly, I will be traveling to San Francisco on May 1st to dance with members of the San Francisco Jazz Dance Company once again – 30 years later!  I have been learning the choreography via video links, we will have two rehearsals when I get there, and then it’s showtime!

Happy Spring at last! May your body welcome the magnificent sunshine and the warmer temperatures.

With my sincere thanks for being part of my community.

Yours in health,

-Rochelle Rice

Upcoming Class!

Sensual Movement for the Fuller Figure with Roz Mays

Saturday, May 3, 2014, 10:30AM – 12 NOON.

Studio 1, 890 Broadway at 19th Street, 5th floor, New York, NY.

Roz Mays, the Diva is proud to bring her Melt workshop to our studio! Based on sensual dance, Melt teaches each student how to melt into the music and reconnect with movements that empower their sensuality. Not a dancer? Not a problem — the Diva happily breaks down every movement to suit your fitness level. Students are encouraged to wear a button down shirt with a top underneath (lingerie is welcome but not required) as well as comfortable bottoms.

Best known for her hot pink sensuality on stage, Roz "The Diva" Mays has dedicated the last four years to becoming a stronger, leaner and more sensual pole dancing athlete. What started out as a casual hobby quickly kicked her butt and redefined the physical capabilities of her body. She has performed at several venues in New York City; most notably, she was selected to perform in three Polesque competitions, finally being crowed champion in Spring 2011. Her pole dancing skills have also opened the door to professional stunt work for major Hollywood productions.
